PACE class disbands in 2015-16 school year

By Bari Cohn

The Mira Costa People Attaining Complete Equality class disbanded in the 2015-16 school year because its advisor retired and there were no supervisors available to take over the class period, according to PACE member Veronica Chen.

According to the club’s website, the main purpose of the club is to focus on four main topics: respect, conflict mediation, peer outreach and drug awareness. This year, members have decided to create a club to continue the programs that were run by the class, including the Every 15 Minutes assembly and Red Ribbon Week.

“I think what is so great about PACE is that it’s an outreach program that allows students to help one another when learning about the problems surrounding drugs, alcohol, body image and other issues,” Chen said.

According to Chen, the class’ previous advisor, Dr. Rocky Wilson, retired a week before school began this year, and there was not enough notice for a new supervisor for the class to be hired.

“Because the PACE class was turned into a club this year, the environment changed,” Chen said. “We did not have as many resources as usual, which had a huge impact on the programs we have ran in the years past.”

PACE students were told they could  potentially merge with the Associated Student Body class; however, due to scheduling difficulties, this did not happen, according ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole. Not all members continue with the club when the class ended.

“I hope that PACE will become a class again in the future,” Chen said. “This program has the ability to impact people’s decision making and create a better life for them in the future.”
