The Mira Costa football team battled against the West High School Warriors on Oct. 15 and defeated them soundly, 41-3. This first Bay League game was an important victory for the Mustangs, as it started their Bay League record off as 1-0 and made their overall record 3-3.
The Mustangs changed their starting quarterback for the second time this year to junior Christian Rogers. He ran the offense well, even though he didn’t pass very frequently. He only found six opportunities to showcase his throwing capabilities. However, one of his attempts was a long touchdown pass up the middle to senior Derek Largent.
The Mustangs ran for five touchdowns in the game. Senior running backs Deon Morris and J.R. Tavai each contributed two touchdowns and junior Stephen Giovati tacked on one more.
Mira Costa’s defense held the Warriors to only a field goal. The defense also forced West to make mistakes, which gave Costa great field position throughout the game.
The Mustangs travel to Palos Verdes next Oct. 22 to take on the Sea Kings in their second Bay League match of the year.
