The Mustangs won their first four games on Oct. 15 at Carmel Valley Middle School and finished in fifth place after losing the first round on Saturday at Canyon Crest Academy. Each match of the tournament was scored best two-out-of-three games, contrary to the conventional three-out-of-five.
The Mustangs started off by sweeping Long Beach Wilson and La Jolla Country Day in the first two matches of the tournament. Next, they defeated Laguna Beach and Rancho Buena Vista in three games each, which moved the team to the top eight bracket.
Costa played the Dos Pueblos Chargers on Saturday morning for the first game of the top eight. Unable to take control of the game, the Mustangs were swept with scores of 25-23 and 25-23. They then played Vista Murrieta, defeating them 25-13, 17-25, and 25-20. This record earned them fifth place.
Senior Emma White was the top offensive player for Costa, though she played minimal minutes to conserve her energy.
