Gavin Heaney, who writes music under the title of Latch Key Kid, spoke to a group of Mira Costa students on Oct. 20 in the Choir room.

Heaney is the first musician to come to Costa as a part of a planned lecture series that music theory teacher Mark McCormick has organized.

“When I was in sixth grade, I just fell in love with music. It was my identity, my escape. It has always been very special to me,” said Heaney.

The singer-songwriter spoke casually and candidly throughout the event. He also performed for the students. The mini set-list included his songs “Good Times,” “Walk About,” “Yesterday,” and an untitled new song.

McCormick primarily organized the lecture series to provide his students with an opportunity to get advice from a professional musician.

“The first step of getting a gig is having a good demo. It doesn’t have to be an album but if you don’t have a demo then they’re just going to see you play in that moment,” said Heaney.

Heaney, who gradated from Mira Costa in the 1990s, has had his music featured in several films and television shows. “Good Times” opens the sound track for the Dreamworks film “I Love You Man.”

“It’s the first song in the movie! It’s pretty exciting for me. It’s a pretty funny movie, I’m glad it didn’t suck,” said Heaney.
