Many Mira Costa students and staff wore purple on Oct. 20 to participate in the “Spirit Day” advertised by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

The “Spirit Day” was a response by GLAAD to the recent series of suicides by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans-gender (LGBT) students because of bullying. They were hoping to increase awareness about the deaths and their circumstances.

“I think it is important for us to recognize what we make by our actions. I believe in creating communities based on caring and trust, and wearing purple today is a step toward that,” English teacher Shawn Chen said.

The Mira Costa Gay Straight Alliance Club has asked its members and other Costa students to support this event.

“Spirit Day was a mark of respect and consideration for those who have committed suicide. It also shows how cohesive the Gay community is in respecting those people,” Mira Costa Gay Straight Alliance club president senior Lindon Chen said.

Next week, it will begin taking part in the “It Gets Better” campaign by recording a video of their own to send words of encouragement and support to the Gay and Lesbian students who suffer from bullying.

“It Gets Better is a very earnest campaign to tell those younger than us that life gets better by showing how we are and how they will be in the future,” Chen said.

“It targets those in middle school who start getting bullied and harassed by their peers. I think it gives them a beacon of hope to live for.”
