Sci-Fi Thriller “Morgan” Disappoints With Cheesy CGI and Amateur

Keeping Morgan a secret would have been a better idea than releasing it worldwide in theaters.

“Morgan”, written by Seth Owen and directed by Luke Scott, was a failed attempt at a new aspect of science fiction. As the film began, the confusing plot combined with lifeless,  monotone acting turned into a over the top blood bath with unrealistic CGI, proving itself to be an overall disappointment for what could have been great.

5 year old Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy), an artificially advanced humanoid experiment, lives her life surrounded by her “family” and “friends”, unaware that those in her life are simply her creators who wanted to use her for testing a non-human species. After an accident occurred in her room, Morgan lost all of her privileges of leaving her underground habitat.

In an attempt to regain her privileges, Morgan’s risk management consultant, Lee Weathers (Kate Mara), was assigned to visit Morgan to give her another chance, or to terminate her.. In a panic mode to stay alive and seek complete revenge on those who have wronged her, Morgan breaks free and starts going on a killing spree.

The film’s risky plot tried to prove itself as doable, but instead went out as a catastrophe. The film started with a series of scenes that had no connection to one another, and ended with a Morgan going on a killing spree. Without any smooth transitions scene to scene, the film left the audience puzzled and uninterested in even attempting to align the plot.

Although the film’s plot was a swing and miss, the acting just furthermore ruined the film. Taylor-Joy’s unexpressive voice paired with a predictable, dry personality spun the film into an oblivion of boredom. Each time Taylor-Joy came onto the screen, the audience knew exactly what to expect,  sucking any suspense from a supposedly suspenseful film.

To add along to Joy’s poor acting, Mara contributed to the droning voices, but was a slight upgrade factor of suspense. For example, at the end of the film when the plot took an unexpected turn, Mara’s unpredictable acting contributed to suspense in the film, but in the end her bland voice took away all the suspense that the scene had.

On top of the poor acting and confusing plot, the CGI added more disgrace for the film. The implausible CGI was so poor it couldn’t even attempt at rendering a sense of horror or suspense, ruining all scenes with tension. Being nonviable, it was almost laughable at how poorly computerized any murder scenes were and made the film a true joke.

All in all, this film is a complete disaster. The unfeasible and corny CGI, garbled unfinished plot, and B level acting came together to destroy the new attempt at this sci-fi/horror film.

The film is playing nationwide and is rated R.
