The Mira Costa Marching Band had their first performance of the year, Trapped in Time, on Sept 9 at the first home varsity football game of the season.

Trapped in Time is about a broken clock that eventually is fixed after it progresses through a dysfunctional sense of time. At the closure of the show, the clock is fixed and it adjusts back to the correct time.

“The halftime show was fantastic,” Marching Band Drum Major Adrian Yu said. “The student section was so loud that we had a few false starts, but I personally saw it as a good thing that the crowd enjoyed it.”

According to Yu, this year marching band decided to cut down on leadership so the group would be more concentrated and focused. The marching band  hired a drill writer, Michael Pote, to compose their music instead of a director because they felt it was time for a change in the music.

“I am planning on approaching this year with a heightened level of  attention to detail and trying to learn each element of the show as well as possible the first time,” Band Teacher Joel Carlson said. “This will help us know how to move around the field and play our parts well.”

According to Carlson, this year they have a new leadership consultant, Ryan H. Turner, to help improve their skills as leaders. They are following a new curriculum called “Dynamics of Leadership” which concentrates on qualities such as integrity, communication, operational excellence and motivation.

“In the past we have had a lot of people that haven’t taken the organization seriously and that has kind of been detrimental towards success,” Band President Sean Syed said. “Focusing on working hard and having fun at the same time has helped us into creating a better product.”

According to Yu, the show consists of three parts: an opener, a ballad, and a closer. They have completed the opener, and are learning the next two parts of the show during weekly rehearsals.

“My idea of success is to create a strong bond with one another,”  Carlson said. “This will help us motivate and push each other with the same goals to give us a greater opportunity of competitive success.”

Their first competition will be on Oct 8. at Royal High School in Simi Valley. They will be competing against approximately a dozen schools within southern California.

“We are excited to present our performance,” Carlson said. We have been working hard and can’t wait to see what the adjudicators will think.”
