In the name of helping others, Mira Costa juniors Bridgette Chalmers and her vice president Breegan Knudson have decided to restart Bridgette’s sister, Lyndsay’s, old club called Cupcakes for a Cause.
Cupcakes for a Cause raises money to donate to an orphanage in Pasadena called Five Acres Orphanage. The club has been out of commision for two years, but Chalmers decided that she wanted to continue her sister’s legacy and start the club up again.
“I was inspired by my sister to restart this club because I saw all of the good that she accomplished with it, such as providing the kids with new materials and books, which is why I wanted to continue to make a difference,” Chalmers said. “I have wanted to do this for a few years, but I was extra motivated to this year because I will only be at Costa for two more years.”

The club has many different events throughout the year, such as club day and book drives, but the most prominent of which is their bake sales. They sell cupcakes on the Manhattan Beach strand along with other baked goods, hence the name Cupcakes for a Cause. Along with bake sales, the club also conducts book drives to help supply the kids with new and exciting stories to read.
“Helping out these kids will be a really rewarding experience and I can’t wait to see the clubs’ hard work pay off,” Chalmers said. “I am really looking forward to see what we can accomplish this year.”
The orphanage Five Acres strives to provide safety, wellbeing and a permanent home to all of its children. The organization has been caring for children for 128 years and is currently helping and assisting over 8,500 children and families in need across the country.
“Through this club I hope that we can give the kids at Five Acres orphanage the best chance to have a good learning experience,” Knudson said. “The orphanage helps so many children and it is a great organization to be involved with.”
Cupcakes for a Cause is planning on visiting the orphanage somethime this school year to help clean up the orphanage and to play with the kids. They also want to give the kids new toys and books to play with and read.
“These kids have so little compared to what we have so I feel obligated to help them out and give them the extra support that they deserve,” Chalmers said. “Through this club we will have the opportunity to improve the lives of these children which is what the purpose of this club is.”
The Club hopes to raise a total of $800 this year which it will donate to the orphanage. To accomplish this goal, the club will participate in club day and conduct bake sales.
“I feel that we can accomplish a lot with this club and I feel confident that we can accomplish our goal for the year,” junior club representative Genevieve Natkins said.
