Powerful strokes, skilled putting, and solid teamwork led to Mira Costa’s victory against South Torrance.

The Mustangs girls golf team defeated South Torrance, 199-275, on Tuesday in its first Bay league match at Los Verdes Golf Course in Palos Verdes. The Mustangs pulled out the win but did not play up to their standards, team co-captain senior Ashley Kim said.

“We didn’t play well as a team,” Kim said. “However, this is the first Bay League match, and we hope to maximize our potential before the Bay League Finals and CIF.”

Kim started strong en route to the low score of the day at even par 36. On the third hole, she hit a nine iron 20 feet from the flag and rolled the putt in for birdie. She also birdied the fifth hole, but Kim said she played sloppily on other holes.

“I played alright, but not to the best of my ability,” Kim said. “Although I had two birdies, I had also two sloppy bogeys.”

Team co-captain senior Lexi Nielsen backed up Kim with a 42. She had a two-under par eagle on the sixth hole after two solid shots and a 25-foot putt.

“Although I wasn’t happy with my overall score, the sixth hole was a bright spot in my day,” Nielsen said. “The team overall did not play great, but we grinded and still ended up winning pretty easily.”

Juniors Klara Nagy and Sanjana Chopra rounded out the team with scores of 37 and 42, respectively.

“I am recovering from an injury, so I was not able to play to the best of my ability,” Chopra said. “We were not ecstatic with our match, but it’s a good starting off point for Bay League.”
