The highly anticipated action-comedy “Red,” was released on October 15. In the film, these four acting legends prove their acting abilities once again—but not without some light-hearted ridicule about their age.

The plot revolves around four former black-ops agents who have been tagged as “R.E.D.,” or “Retired and Extremely Dangerous,” due to their knowledge of corrupt CIA dealings.

These four innocent agents are framed for assassination, and the CIA sends forces after them in what turns into an epic and entertaining chase toward acquittal and justice.

The film is based off a three-issue miniseries of DC comics released in 2003 and 2004, also entitled “Red.” Written and illustrated by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer, the comic series is much simpler than the movie. It only follows the character of Frank Moses (Bruce Willis).

Each of the film’s stars brings something different to the table. Willis adds his famous tough and wild attitude, and Malkovich offers his unique and ridiculous humor. Mirren’s calm and collective manner comically clashes with her violent nature, and Freeman serves as the warm and almost-omniscient character he is known to play so well.

The story plays up the actors’ ages, which is definitely above that of most actors. In one scene, Malkovich’s anger over condescendingly being called an “old man” adds humor to an otherwise action-heavy scene.

Mary-Louise Parker also plays a large role in the film, that of Moses’ love interest Sarah Ross. Ross and Moses have an awkward and quirky relationship originating in their phone conversations over his pension. Their friendship ultimately proves lucrative and charming when it blossoms into love. While their age difference—she is youthful and chipper while he is older and more poised—makes this a bit strange, it certainly adds the spice needed in any action-comedy.

The film’s one drawback is its lack of plausibility. While it is entertaining to watch aged action stars sprint through explosions and gunfights, audiences need a bit more than suspension of disbelief to enjoy the ridiculousness of “Red.”

This small blunder is made up for with the film’s excellent twists. Each little surprise in the story fills out the edges of this already-thrilling escapade, culminating in an unsuspected but satisfying conclusion.

“Red” tastefully blends humor, adventure and romance in a unique but well-executed and exciting action-comedy. “Red” is rated PG-13 and playing in theaters nationwide.
