Despite a terrific performance in its morning matchup against San Clemente, Mira Costa’s boys beach volleyball team couldn’t keep its winning streak alive in the afternoon, falling 2-1 to Santa Monica ending a four game win streak.

On September 24, the team swept San Clemente in its first game 3-0, in large part due to a strong performance from sophomore Thomas Kretschmer. However, the Mustangs were unable to secure the win against the Santa Monica Vikings, losing 2-1 overall, in three very tight matches.

“It’s always tough anytime you lose especially when it’s close, but overall I think we played well today,” said Kretschmer. “We will learn from this and be better moving forward.

The Mustangs are currently 5-1 in Bay League and 6-2 overall. Their next match will take place at Dockweiler beach on Saturday. According to coach Kyle Denitz the team has the potential to become the top program in the South Bay.

“We have the ability to compete with anybody,” Denitz said. “We just have to be able to do it at a consistent level.”
