“Wild World”, Bastille’s newest addition to an array of electro-indie pop songs is a great
contrast of gloomy, upbeat rhythms and sonic whiplash filled with powerful lyrics. In addition,
all nineteen songs in the album are based off of unwanted emotions, anxieties and insecurities.
Bastille also address conflicts within society such as physical expectations and it’s cruelness.
The british pop band originated from London and was formed in 2010. They have
twelve other very successful albums filled with an array of exceptional music. Bastille consists
of four members Dan Smith vocalist , Kyle Simmons guitarist , Will Farquarson guitarist, and
Chris the drummer.
“Wild World” exquisitely demonstrates the band’s ability to create enthralling, mosaic, and
meaningful music. Musically, Bastille also took a larger, bolder sound through incorporating a
new musical style. EDM was frequently used to propel and drop hook songs as well as
incorporating hand clapped rhythms and drum machines that carried hymns that were easy to
sing along to.
Song “An Act Of Kindness” speaks about feelings of hopelessness and panic that one might
experience in their daily life due to anxiety. Songs like this are important because they may help
people cope with their problems and have better understanding of them. The album also
expresses the band’s feelings of guilt and not being able to give a positive vibe to people in
return with “An Act Of Kindness.”
Tunes “Power”, sends a strong message about anxiety. “Power” informs listeners that they
have the strength to overcome or move forward from situations that weight over them. This is
inspiring to listeners because it share that one may be able to overcome any situation because
they have the power to do so.
“Fake It” shares the painful story of an individual who masked their feelings and pretended to be
fine when they were is a very fragile state of mind. The beat of the song is a catchy tune that
warms the soul and grab the viewer’s attention. Lyrics are very deep and depressing although the
song is happy, this concept was confusing overall.
“Wild World” was opened with song “Good Grief” and it beautifully set the tone and was
very contrasting from the rest of the songs in the album that were based off of dark experiences
coping with both internal and external struggles. “Good Grief” is intriguing because it’s upbeat,
catchy, and a great song to start every morning although the lyrics are at times depressing.
Although Bastille has been able to create an amazing album, an hour of constant sonic
whiplash may be tiring to some listeners. However it’s bold of the band to attempt a wide variety
of styles, and the turn out was astonishing. Overall “Wild World” sets itself in present day
problems because of human interaction emotions.
“Wild World” by Bastille was released on September 9, 2016 and can be found on iTunes for
$12.99.
