The Mira Costa Mustangs defeated Newport Harbor High School at Waller Stadium Friday night 42-0 with offensive efforts from senior wide receiver Alec Oshita.
To start off the game, the Mustangs were able to march 75 yards down the field and cap their drive with an Oshita touchdown giving them an early 7-0 lead.
“I thought on offense we executed our plays well and played hard,” Oshita said. “We blocked great up front and that allowed Reed to get us receivers the ball more often and score.”
After the Mustangs scored, they forced Newport to punt after running only three plays. With Costa in possession of the football inside their own 20 yard line, senior Justin Goring was able to break free for an 81 yard touchdown padding the Mustang’s lead.
“This win today helped us get some kind of idea of the team we are,” junior cornerback Evanson Frank-Love said. “it was important because it also showed us how tough we can match up against our opponents.”
Not only were the Mustangs able to keep Newport scoreless, but they were also able to record two interceptions as well as six “three and outs”.
“Our defense had an amazing game,” Frank-Love said. “We were able to shut down Newports offense and Vabrey has done a great job of stepping up and making the right reads and passes when we need them most.”
Offensively, Vabrey was able to find the endzone on three different occasions, to Oshita and senior wide receiver Sean Walker without conceding an interception or any kind of turnover.
“We believe that Vabrey will put us in the position we need to be in,” coach Cameron Chow said. “I think all the other guys will need to work a little harder to get him comfortable making key plays as he is still a new starting quarterback.”
The Mustangs, 3-2 overall, will play its next game away on Friday against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings.
“I think we can keep the momentum up from tonight’s game,” Oshita said. “Things are finally starting to click offensively and defensively and we are on a win streak and feel confident in our ability to play.”
