Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews notified families this morning via email regarding ammunition that was found at Grand View Elementary School on Friday.

According to the email sent by Matthews, the ammunition was found stored in a closet on campus, although were said to be old and most likely incapable of harm. A school employee was questioned on Monday and is claiming responsibility for the ammunition.

According to Grand View Principal Nancy Doyle in her follow-up email sent to families this afternoon, the school employee committed negligence, an illegal crime, by storing the ammunition on campus instead of properly disposing of it. The employee is on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.

“According to the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the school employee demonstrated negligence by illegally storing these items on school property, which is a crime,” Doyle said. “..The investigative findings will be submitted by MBPD to the District Attorney’s Office for further review.”

According to Doyle, they do not believe this is a threat to the school. As a safety precaution, MBPD will increase their presence at the school and conduct a full campus search. Any concerned families will be able to attend a safety meeting on Friday morning to discuss their concerns.

My primary concern is the safety of the school community and surrounding neighborhood,” MBUSD President Ellen Rosenberg said. “I think Dr. Matthews did a good job informing the Grand View community.”
