An armed robbery took place on Sept. 29 in the Mira Costa parking lot and Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews sent an email to all MBUSD parents and guardians yesterday regarding an update from the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

According to MBPD, the suspect stole a cell phone and the victim and witness described the suspect as a “male black adult, 18-25 years old, 5’7” tall, 150-165 lbs., with a mustache, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with possible collegiate writing and camouflage shorts.”

“Going forward, based on the advice from law enforcement, this is an opportunity to remind everyone of easy steps to take to remain secure,” the Manhattan Beach Unified Teachers Association said in the email. “First, try to park in well-lit areas. Second, keep valuables out of your hand as you go to your car. Finally, be aware of your surroundings.”

According to MBPD, a suspect of the same description committed similar crimes within 20 minutes of the armed robbery in both Redondo Beach and Hawthorne. A man was arrested for the crime in Hawthorne, but the Manhattan Beach victim and witness could not positively identify him. MBPD’s investigation is currently on-going.

“We will continue working with the Manhattan Beach Police Department to ensure that we receive information about incidents like this that are in or around our schools to maximize the safety of our students and faculty,” Matthews said in his email.
