James Alec Meyerhoff splashes into the fall season as the new coach for the Mira Costa boys water polo team, coaching the boys frosh-soph and junior varsity teams.
Meyerhoff grew up in El Segundo where he attended El Segundo High School. He started playing water polo for his high school team and the Trojan Water Polo Club during his freshman year.
“The reason I started playing water polo is because I grew up in Southern California,” Meyerhoff said. “Although at first it was something I did because I wanted to play with the cool guys, I soon loved it because you are with your friends in the water and in the sun.”
Upon graduating from high school, Meyerhoff attended Santa Monica City College before transferring to Concordia University in Irvine. He continued to play water polo all throughout college.

“The thing I like the best about the sport is the fact that it’s challenging,” Meyerhoff said. “Water polo has so many difficult aspects taken from other sports that are then placed in the water.”
Meyerhoff coached the boys frosh-soph and junior varsity teams at El Segundo High from 2010-2011. In addition to his new Costa coaching commitments, Meyerhoff is coaching for his second year for the Trojan Water Polo Club. He trains 12 to 14-year-old girls in addition to training 10-and-under boys and girls teams.
“The best water polo players need to be smart,” Meyerhoff said. “The sport is so complicated, so it is necessary for all players to have a good understanding of the game.”
Meyerhoff has continued playing water polo outside of coaching through his involvement in the Master’s League, a pick-up water polo group on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. every week.
“Meyerhoff works very hard to get the team ready,” Costa sophomore and Trojan Water Polo Club member center Troy Gleason said. “His passion for water polo is shown through his coaching.”
