Two wins, one loss, Costa must block the other teams attempt to win the match.
Mira Costa’s girls volleyball team defeated Chaparral High School 3-1 in the second round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) game on Thursday at home, after having a bye in the first round. The top player was senior outside hitter Alexa Underwood with 26 kills.
“We did really well in blocking and hitting, especially in the middle,” senior setter Britt Bommer said.
Costa started fairly even against Chaparral High School, with not many rallies. The Mustangs were able to pull ahead in the end, winning the first match with scores of 25-20.
“We did a good job with staying put on defense and not making prior moves to seeing the offensive attack,” senior outside hitter Hannah Scott said.
The Mustangs fell behind in the second match and neared the end with the score of 17-22. At the end, Costa was able to catch up quickly and won with the score of 26-24.
“Even though we were trailing in most of the game, we did a good job sticking with them,” Scott said
The Mustangs fell behind in the third match with a score of 21-18 near the end. The team was able to come back with a couple of points before losing the game 25-22.
“We did a good job covering our hitters and moving the ball around to create opening in the block,” sophomore outside hitter Sami Underwood said.
Costa came back strong in the fourth game and was able to win the game with the score of 25-18. According to Scott, Costa did a good job with sliding out quickly.
“I think we had a lot of high energy and we’re able to push through each point in order to finish a pretty clean match,” sophomore libero Malia Yuhl said.
Costa now continuing in CIF, will compete against Edison High School from Huntington Beach on Saturday at home. Costa will have to continue to win the next games to advance in CIF.
“We lost to Edison last time so this game is super important and we want to go all the way, so we need to play our best and make sure we stay focused,” sophomore middle blocker Memphis Glasgow said.
