With powerful serves, tons of team spirit, and incredible footwork, the Mira Costa girls tennis team dominated Troy High School.
Mira Costa girls tennis defeated Troy High School 12-6 in their first CIF game on Wednesday while playing away at Troy High School with a top performance by senior Amy Gaal.
“As a team I believe that we have a lot of spirit,” junior Maya Serota said. “Throughout the game we all cheered each other on and gave our teammates the confidence to get the win.”
Leading singles player, senior Amy Gaal made big plays against Troy’s number one singles player winning her matches 6-2, 6-0, and 6-2. Gaal said that, she was very pleased with how she played and lead the team to victory.
“I am happy with my performance,” Gaal said. “I focused on making the other girl run around the court by hitting the ball side to side causing her to become very tired.”
Senior singles player Lena Nagy helped lead the team to victory by winning her game 6-0 against the number two singles player before having to leave with a minor injury to her hand. Nagy said that the injury was very minor and that she will be able to play on Friday.
“The injury I suffered was very minor,” Nagy said. “Before I was was injured I was having very good rallies and hitting the ball back very hard.”
Senior Morgan Kelley, won two of her matches 6-2 before losing her final one 4-6 in a very close match. According to Kelley she played consistently well throughout the day and needs to work on her serves to get better.
“The first two games I played were very solid,” said Kelley. “I just need to work on my serves for the next game so I can win all three.”
Doubles partners Isabel Draskovic and Katrina Draskovic dominated against their opponents, winning their games 6-0, 6-3, and 6-2. According to Draskovic it was very fun getting the opportunity to play with her sister.
“As my sister I can tell what she is going to do most of the time,” Draskovic said. “Having this very good chemistry is essential when playing and gives us the advantage.”
The Mustangs are now 15-5 overall and will face off against Arcadia High School on Friday at home in their next CIF game. Serota said the team is very excited to be moving on in CIF and hope they can go even further with a win against Arcadia.
“The girls are all very excited that we won today,” Serota said. “The next game will be a bit more challenging but that is to be expected when moving on to the next round.”
