The Mira Costa Mustangs were defeated by the Redondo Union Seahawks 13-6 on the road Friday night in the final game of the Bay League season. Despite performances from junior Fullback Jonah Tavai, the Mustangs were unable to get the win.

In the second quarter, Tavai bulldozed his way into the end zone for a 6 yard rushing touchdown. After a missed PAT attempt, the score was 7-6 for Redondo Union. Late in the 4th quarter, Tavai was stuffed near the goal line, and Costa was not able to score.

“It was an unfortunate game,” Tavai said. “The offense did everything we needed to do to win this game except for converting big third and fourth downs throughout the game.”

The Mustangs will finish their Bay League season with a 5-1 record, heading into CIF Playoffs next week, tied with a number one seed. The Mustangs will play in their first round at Waller Stadium Friday against an undetermined opponent.

“All of these battles you play, like tonight, mentally prepare us for the bigger games to come,” Coach Cameron Chow said. “We won’t dwell on the loss, as we played well enough to win the game, but it will definitely be a motivator for us going into CIF.”
