The ball strikes the ground and the referees pronounce the winning point, the Mustangs have won once again.
Girls volleyball defeated Edison High School 3-1 at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) quarter final game on Saturday at home. The top players were senior outside hitter Alexa Underwood with 19 kills and senior outside hitter Amanda Montag with 14 kills.
“We played with a chip on our shoulders and applied what we worked on all week in practice,” Montag said. “ We left it all on the court and everyone played great.”
Costa quickly took the lead in the first match 14-9 and was able to win it with scores of 25-19. According to senior outside hitter Hannah Scott, Costa did a good job at sliding out.
“We served well and kept them on their toes throughout the whole match,” senior setter Britt Bommer said. “Our energy never dwindled and our crowd helped us immensely in keeping the morale high.”
Edison came back strong in the second match, taking the lead 4-8. The Mustangs had a small comeback in the middle of the match and were able to pull ahead in the end, winning with scores of 25-23.
“We had a lot of self confidence and truly believed we could win,’ Montag said.
Costa began the third match fairly even against Edison, however the Mustangs were able to push ahead 8-7. Edison trailed by a couple of points throughout the match before tieing Costa in the end 24-24. Edison eventually won the match 27-25.
“We could’ve started out a little stronger in the third game,” sophomore middle blocker Memphis Glasgow said.
The Mustangs once again started out even in the fourth match and began to excel by the middle of the match with major blocks made by the front row. Costa won 25-17 and is now continuing on in CIF.
“We had a lot of energy and really wanted to win,” Glasgow said. “We haven’t been in the semifinals for a few years so it’s a big deal.”
Costa, now 26-3 overall, competes against Mater Dei High School on Tuesday at an away game for the CIF semi finals. Costa will have to win this game to move on to the finals.
“We lost to Mater Dei last year in CIF so I think that can only add to our energy, motivation, and intensity,” sophomore middle blocker Caroline McQuiggan said.
