Girls tennis falls to Arcadia 15-3 in first round of CIF

Powerful serves and strong hits were all but lacking from the Mira Costa girls tennis team as they were defeated by Arcadia High School.

Mira Costa’s girls tennis team was defeated by Arcadia High School 15-3 in their first California Interstate Federations game on Wednesday at home. Despite a valiant effort and a top performance by junior Isabella Draskovic, the team was unable come out on top.

“As a team we never stopped fighting today,” junior Maya Serota said. “Every one of the girls gave it their best and despite the loss I felt we all played with lots of passion.”

Top doubles player Draskovic won two of her matches with a score of 6-3 and 6-2 while playing the number two doubles team, however she lost her first match 6-1 against the opponent’s number one doubles team. Draskovic felt she played very well throughout the day.

“I feel that despite the loss I gave it my all today,” Draskovic said. “I really wanted to move on to the next round of CIF but there is always next year.”

Top senior singles player Amy Gaal lost two of her sets 6-3, 6-2 while playing against the opponent’s number one singles player.  She also lost 6-4 against the opponent’s number two singles player.  Gaal said that she was feeling a bit under the weather which may have hurt her performance.

“It sucks that I wasn’t feeling 100 percent today,” Gaal said. “I definitely was playing like my usual self and .”

Freshman singles player Bella Buchta, lost two of her sets 6-1 and 6-0 while playing against the opponent’s number two singles player.  She also lost 6-0 against the opposing team’s number one singles player.  According to Bella the other team played very well and in order to do better next time she is going to have to work on her serves.

“The other team was clearly very well put together and organized,” Buchta said.  “However throughout the day I realized that i need to work on my serves to get my game to the next level.”

The Mustangs finished the season 15-6 overall and 5-2 in Bay League.  Serota said the team played so good all year and it was a very disappointing loss today.

“It’s sad that the season had to come to an end today,” Serota said.  “It was a great team to be apart of and I can’t wait for next season.”
