Another ball hits the ground. Cheers go up from the crowd… but it’s for the wrong team.

Mira Costa’s girls volleyball team lost to Mater Dei in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) semi final game on Tuesday. The top players were senior outside hitter Alexa Underwood with 13 kills and senior outside hitter Amanda Montag with 9 kills.

Costa started out slow in the first match, falling behind 5-1. The Mustangs were able to catch back up by the middle of the match, 22-19, allowing them to win 25-19 in the end.

“We started of strong in the first game and our energy was good because we really wanted to win,” sophomore middle blocker Memphis Glasgow said.

The Mustangs started the second match fairly even with Mater Dei, with scores of 5-5 in the beginning. Costa slowly began to trail Mater Dei by a couple of points midway through the match. Unable to catch back up, Costa lost the match 25-12.

“I think our energy was lower and there wasn’t a crowd to pump us up,” sophomore outside hitter Sami Underwood said.

The third match started with even scores again but Mater Dei was able to take the lead again, 18-16. Costa continued to stay behind throughout the match and Mater Dei eventually won the match 25-20.

“We had really great defense,” senior outside hitter Hannah Scott said.

Costa started out slow in the fourth match, with scores of 6-2. The Mustangs were able to have a small comeback, tying Mater Dei 10-10 in the middle of the match. Mater Dei advanced and won 25-18, giving them the overall win.

“I feel like we dug ourselves a hole and we weren’t able get out of it,” Scott said.

The Mustangs are now out of CIF but will continue onto State next week on Tuesday. Costa will continue, even after not winning the semi finals, because of the great success they had earlier this season.

“It feels great to have gone so far, but it still feels like our season has a lot to go and I hope we go far in state,” Bommer said.
