Mira Costa students participated in the nation-wide “Walkout for Peace” during second period today in an effort to voice their opinions on the recent presidential election.
Before leaving campus, students assembled outside of the office and Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale and Security Lead Ray Lee walked them from Costa to Manhattan Beach City Hall. Earlier today, Dale sent an email to all teachers notifying them of the walk and he gave teachers permission to allow their students to participate, although their absence will still be unexcused.
“My role in this is to keep the kids safe,” Dale said. “As it continues to move forward and the process works itself out our role is to keep kids safe.”
About 100 students participated in the event. More joined during nutrition and a unity rally will take place at lunch later today.
“The purpose of the walk is to show that the students of Mira Costa have valid opinions that should be heard elsewhere besides amongst ourselves,” junior Dalia Feliciano said. “A lot of us aren’t old enough to vote, so I think this is a really good way to express our anger and fear regarding the results of the election.”
