Vampires, mummies, unicorns, witches, and fairies don’t usually surf, but at the Scare and Tear Surf Contest, they do.
Spyder Surf held it’s 12th annual Scare and Tear Surf Contest on Oct. 29 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. It brought the community together to enjoy Halloween weekend with food, games, surf, and partake in a community run, and sponsored competition.
“The contest was great because it allows for people to celebrate their favorite holiday while doing the sport they love,” sophomore Mckenna Hawkes said. “Surfing in the contest also improves my surfing ability and stamina because it’s difficult to surf with a costume on.”
In the competition there were six people per heat, and only the top three advance to the next round. All the divisions started with round one and ended with a final. The divisions are Micro Zombs (5th grade and up), Zombs (high schoolers), and Creatures (high school and up).
“Our outreach brings young and old together for a fun day at the beach,” Dennis Jarvis, Spyder Surf owner said. “Bringing some wild outfits and a great imagination.”
The competitors of the Scare and Tear were judged on their best one wave and their costume. Tracy Geller, Mira Costa Surf Team Coach says it takes the pressure of a regular contest off and places emphasis on having a fun event at the beach for all ages.
“I think it being a costume event made the emphasis more fun than serious,” Geller said. “It is what got us all into it to begin with. The pure enjoyment of the whole beach, ocean, and surfing lifestyle.”

This year in the Micro Zombs division Cash Cherry placed second and Joey Samuelian placed first. In the Zombs division Beck Cherry placed second and Kyra Williams placed first. In the Creatures division Tamara Lentz took the win as Elsa and Olaf from Walt Disney’s Frozen.
“It was an amazing experience to compete in the Scare and Tear because it allowed me to gain confidence and understanding of how to use strategies in my heats,” Hawkes said.

According to Jarvis, Spyder hosts the contests to “Keep the stoke” in the South Bay and will continue to hold many events and contests. The money they make goes straight towards their business to keep the stoke and continue providing the community with surf, snow, and skate gear and clothing and not be run out by incoming corporate run businesses.
We have done 10 Spyder surf feats and 3 Spyder snow fests,” Jarvis said. “We are a family owned company, not a large corporation, but we are also in the top 6 of vendors “best of” lists and that gives us credibility as one of the top surf shops in all of the USA.”
