Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body held its triannual student, parent and faculty Blood Drive today in Fisher Gym.
The Blood Drive lasted from 8 am to 1:30 pm and over 150 people, mostly students, participated. The University of California, Los Angeles Hospital coordinated the event with ASB and brought in supplies and nurses.
“If they meet the requirements, we make sure everyone knows that each person who donates can save 3 lives,” ASB member and senior Gabi DeCarlo said. “[ASB works] the blood drive by cutting bandages, providing snacks and helping the nurses’ team who comes with their equipment.”

All participants had to be 16 years or older and weigh at least 110 pounds in order to take part in the blood drive. In addition, each person could not have gotten a piercing or travelled out of the country in the past year.
“The turnout of Mira Costa is always good because it’s such a big school,” UCLA Hospital lab technician Matthew Hoffman said. “For a good drive, we collect around 115 to 150 united of clean blood. We have to make sure the donator isn’t sick or have a blood condition that can contaminate the blood.”
