Mira Costa’s Model United Nations Program attended the Brown University Simulation of the United Nations and Bruin Model United Nations Conferences and is currently at the Paris Model United Nations Conference this month in order to compete with other programs.

MUN won 16 total individual awards at the BUSUN conference at Brown University on Nov. 11-13.

Twenty-five Costa students attended the BUSUN conference and won six commendation awards, five outstanding delegate awards and five BUSUN gavels.

“I enjoyed this MUN conference because I was able to travel to Boston and Providence for the first time,” sophomore Michael Zuker said. “I researched more than usual for this conference because it was my first travel debate.”

MUN placed second at the BruinMUN conference last weekend at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Approximately 100 Mira Costa students attended BruinMUN where Costa won the Outstanding Large Delegation, the second highest award. Costa’s delegates won 11 honorable mention awards, seven outstanding awards and five gavels

“I think we did fairly well,” Secretary General and senior Eliza Davis said. “There is fine tuning that needs to be done, but everyone put in a solid effort and performed well.”

MUN is preparing for the PAMUN conference this weekend in Paris, France.

A total of 16 Costa students will attend PAMUN for the debate this weekend. Costa delegates look to perform well in Paris, but the results are always unpredictable, Secretary General and senior Matt DuMont said.

“The rules of the Paris conference are different than those we are used to,” Costa MUN teacher Wayne Knutson said. “With that being said, we are going to try and do extremely well.”

Costa’s MUN program will have completed its fifth, sixth and seventh conferences of the year prior to December. The group looks to continue its success when it runs the LAIMUN conference at Costa on Dec. 3-4.

“Our next conference will be here at Costa, and we expect to run a top quality conference,” MUN teacher Robert Timberlake said. “We will aim for quality, and well-thought-out topics and policies.”
