Beginning his show with wild howls that were echoed by the crowd, Chance the Rapper hosted an impressive performance that wowed the audience.

Chance’s superb performance engaged the crowd with innovative additions to songs and a creative setlist, which made up for the lacking special effects.

Chance performed right after The Internet at the Camp Stage at 7:05 last Saturday. He performed many of his infamous songs from Acid Rap, the Coloring Book, and also many singles.

Chance began the show with the song ‘Angels’, which electrified the crowd as they began to sing along. These upbeat songs set the tone for the rest of the night. After performing many of these own big hits, he also sung songs by Kanye West and his own verses in Ultralight Beam, which animated the crowd even more.

Unexpectedly, Chance ripped off his baby-blue shirt as D.R.A.M ran on stage and the two began singing ‘Broccoli’, and Chance sung verses of Lil Yatchy and instantly the crowd went crazy as they bellowed the lyrics back at them while Chance wildly jumped up and down.

There were several times when the stage went pitch black, and it seemed Chance had left. Periods of up to a minute of silence confused the crowd. However, each time flashing lights, fire effects, and loud bass came back, the audience was revived. This added a suspenseful,  mysterious aspect as no one knew what would happen next.

Besides the expected songs such as ‘No Problem’ and ‘Favorite Song’, Chance also played touching songs such as ‘All We Got’. This slow song put the crowd in a dream-like state as a bright unfaltering light shone across the crowd, providing an unanticipated light mood.

Many of the songs he performed differed from the digital versions, as live trumpets were incorporated. The live trumpet player contributed to almost all of Chance’s songs,  adding a unique twist not heard before.

One drawback of the performance was the simplicity of the background and special effects. The fire and back LED lit screen was captivating at first, but became repetitive as the show went on. The back screen flashed random items, which only brought headaches and was a simply mundane addition.

Another disappointment was that the festival only had two stages, resulting in thousands of people fighting just to get a glimpse at him. With no elevated area, people were forced to constantly stand on their tippy toes to just see the telescreen. This caused the performance to feel claustrophobic and crammed as tons of sweaty people rubbed up against each other.

Overall, Chance the Rapper lived up to his name, providing both an exciting and compassionate experience. His crowd-pleasing ability and performances of both his new and old songs made up for the underwhelming stage design and large crowds.
