Mira Costa’s boys wrestling team placed first in its meet at San Pedro High School, against Marquez High, Redondo, and San Pedro. Top performers included junior Mitchell Halvorsen and sophomore Tyler Gordon.
Halvorsen, who participated in the 126-pound division, went 2-1 in his matches, beating his Redondo Union and Marquez opponents, but losing to his opponent from San Pedro. According to Halvorsen, he performed pretty well overall.
“I wrestled mostly well today but unfortunately lost to Jesus Mejia from San Pedro,” Halvorsen said. “He’s a pretty well-known wrestler in wrestling circles and he was a strong opponent, but I think I held my own.”
Gordon, who participated in the 152-pound weight division, placed first place in his individual weight class winning his only fight against his opponent from Redondo and getting byes in his other fights. Gordon believed he wrestled well for the day.
“I felt like I performed really well for who I had to wrestle,” Gordon said. However, I still need to improve on minor things in my techniques.”
The wrestling team, now 1-1 overall, will travel to their third meet of the season at West High this Saturday. According to Gordon the Mustangs are looking to build off the momentum of this win.
“Our team as a whole did extremely well and I am very proud of each of them,” Gordon said. “I am impressed how far we have come since last season and we are excited for West.”
