Mira Costa’s Model United Nations program hosted and participated in the 22nd annual LAIMUN conference at Mira Costa on Saturday and Sunday with eight Mira Costa students winning best delegate awards.
Both Advanced and novice debaters participated in the conference; however, the novice debate ended on Saturday while the advanced group continued until Sunday. Delegates at the conference discussed a wide variety of topics regarding the United Nations including climate change among others.
“Preparing as much as possible helps a ton in these conferences,” sophomore Lucas Falley said. “Using class time to discuss topics with my committee allowed me to succeed.”
Since Costa hosted the conference, the students who participated were awarded separately from other schools to avoid accusations of being bias. The program felt as if it ran a smooth conference this year for the most part, senior Walker Heintz said.
“We set up the conference this year and it turned out running very smoothly,” Heintz said. “The conference ran much better than conferences of most years prior.”
