Mira Costa’s girls wrestling team placed first in its meet at San Pedro High School on Thursday, against West, Lawndale, and San Pedro. Top performers included freshman Cali Sheldon, sophomore Bianca Bosnoyan, and freshman Ella Butler.
Sheldon, who competed in the 101-pound division, went 3-0 in her matches with her most notable win coming in just a 45 second pin against West. According to Sheldon, the hard work and intense practice led her to the wins.
“I tried my hardest and it paid off,” Sheldon said. “The team was so supportive of all of the other girls and it was so fun to compete with all my teammates cheering me on.”
The team was missing their star wrestler, junior Sasha Medvidovic, to an unspecified injury. Medvidovic, who placed third in the CIF Southern Section individuals last year, said she was proud of the way the team performed.
“I’m really proud of my team for taking first especially since most of the girls are 1st year wrestlers,” Medvidovic said. “They exceeded expectations and wrestled very well.”
The team, 1-0 overall, will travel to their second meet of the season at La Puente High School on Dec. 16. According to Sheldon, the team performed well as a whole and looks to build on their win.
“The team did amazing for our first dual meet and everyone who competed was spectacular,” Sheldon said. “We look forward to La Puentes and hopefully we will win there again too.
