Mira Costa’s boys wrestling team placed second in its meet on Saturday at West High School in Torrance, against 18 teams. Top performers included sophomore Tyler Gordon and junior Jared Williams.

Gordon, who participated in the 138-pound division, went 2-1 in his matches, beating his Paloma Valley and Royal opponents, but losing to his opponent from West. According to Gordon, he performed well overall.

“I wrestled mostly well today but unfortunately lost to my opponent from West High,” Gordon said. “All in all, I’m proud of the team as a whole.”

Williams, who participated in the 152-pound weight division, placed first place and won MVP in his individual weight class winning against all four of his opponents from Dominguez High, Western High, West Torrance, and South Torrance. Williams believed he wrestled well for the day.

“ I felt I performed fairly well,” Williams said. “I got first with the upper weight outstanding wrestler award since I pinned everyone in the first two minutes.”

The wrestling team, now 1-2 overall, will travel to their fourth meet of the season at Irvine High on Saturday. According to Williams, the Mustangs are looking to build off the momentum of this win.

“Our team did extremely well today and we took home a lot of medals,” Williams said. “Unfortunately, we just barely missed out on first place, but we are still energized and excited for our next match.”
