The City of Hermosa Beach hosted its annual Sand Snowman building contest yesterday where participants brought out their many tools including shovels, buckets, mittens and Santa hats to help create and decorate their snowmen.

Hermosa Beach sponsors this free event for the community each year in hopes of providing fun for kids, Hermosa Beach Youth Program Coordinator Nick Shattuck said. Aside from the awards, there were also giveaways to the kid participants.

“It’s super fun each year,” Shattuck said. “We have a lot of the same families who come out so it is awesome to see so many familiar faces.”

The Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation Commissioners judged the snowmen and awarded participants gift certificates to the Kiwanis Tree lot for Most Unique, Best Dressed, Funniest, Most Traditional, and Hermosa Beach Favorite.

“I have been a judge for the past four years and it’s the highlight of my commission responsibilities,” Parks and Recreation Commissioner Jani Lange said. “There’s nothing like putting Hermosa Beach’s unique twist on the holidays.”
