Mira Costa’s boys wrestling team placed fifth in its 20-team meet on Saturday at the Irvine Tournament. Top performers included senior Sam Michelson and junior Jared Williams.

Michelson, who participated in the 184-pound division, went 3-0 in his matches. According to Coach Chaney, he performed well overall.

“Michelson had a great day,” Chaney said. “His hard work in practices and previous matches really paid off, and was evident in his success today.”

Williams, who participated in the 154-pound weight division, placed second place in his individual weight class, winning against 2 out of 3 of his opponents. Williams believed he did not wrestle to the best of his ability for the day.

“I felt like I could have done better and the team could have wrestled better as well,” Williams said. “ We were missing about half our team, and hopefully next week, everyone will be ready to go.”

The wrestling team, now 1-3 overall, will participate in their fifth meet of the season at home on Tuesday. According to junior Mitchell Halvorsen, the Mustangs are looking to build off the momentum of this match.

“Our team did alright today even though we were missing many wrestlers,” Halvorsen said. “Unfortunately, we missed out on first place, but we are still excited and eager for our next match at home.”
