While many students used the Rally for Unity and Hope at Mira Costa to express their passions against President-elect Donald Trump. Kelly Sidney took the opportunity to express her support for him.

Sidney’s speech took place only a few hours after Mira Costa experienced a walk-out in which over 100 students walked from campus to the Manhattan Beach City Council to protest the election of Trump.  She felt that by participating in this election, she did her duty as an American citizen, Sidney said.

“I believe that it is important for students to express their opinions because we have the right to, but how many people are handling the election’s results is dividing our nation,” Sidney said.

In her speech, Sidney spoke about how students could control their own futures by remaining positive. She also stressed the importance of remaining a unified country, saying that the United States would be strongest together. Finally, she stated that the ideas of the party that a person identifies with do not always coincide with every one’s political views.

“I spoke about these three topics mainly because many people are discouraged right now and rightfully so,” Sidney said. “However, we need to come together to make a better tomorrow.”

According to Sidney, the rally had immediate results in repairing the tension between those with differing political views . She stated that a leader of the Young Democrats Club complimented her on her speech.

“Not everything is black and white, and many assumptions are made by everyone everyday and sometimes people just need to set the record straight and speak their minds,” Sidney said. “I see a very peaceful and pleasant relationship between the two parties beginning to form at Mira Costa.”

Kelly formed the Young Republicans Club alongside her Co-President Patrick Lucas in early October. According to Sidney, the focus of forming the club was to create a space where young Republicans at Mira Costa could meet to discuss the ideas of the Republican party and support the Republican nominee before and after the election.

“I chose to participate on behalf of the Young Republicans Club,” Sidney said. “Many people believe that their party defines who they are, but I wanted to express that people are bigger than their party.”
