Costa’s girls soccer team was defeated by North Torrance High School 1-0 at South Torrance High in the second round of the South Tournament. Despite defensive performance from junior defender Genevieve Watkins, the Mustangs were unable to hold on.

Throughout the match, Watkins and senior defender/forward Emelie Flaig were kept busy because of constant counter attacks from the North High side. Watkins believes the team needed to finish their scoring opportunities if they hoped to come away with a win.

“We played well and dominated the match the whole game,” Watkins said. “We were able to keep possession and create scoring opportunities for ourselves, but unfortunately we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

The Mustangs, now 4-1-1 overall, will take on the South Torrance High School Spartans on Monday at South Torrance. Flaig says that the team is now even more motivated for this game than before because they are determined to avoid losing two straight games.

“I think that coming out of our first loss, we are going to come back stronger than ever each time we step on the field,” Flaig said. “We are all very determined to win games and I truly believe our team chemistry this year is amazing.”
