In reaction to the ongoing California drought, juniors Philip Wah and Zach Horowitz have been working with the Water Conservation Club to implement methods to limit the amount of water wasted. In the Water Conservation Club, 11 other students meet with Wah and Horowitz during lunch in room 46 to discuss ideas for promoting and implementing water conservation methods in the South Bay.
“I started this club because I saw a big problem happening in California, and nobody was addressing it,” Wah said. “I wanted to bring awareness of the drought and get our campus talking about possible solutions.”
Among a number of other projects at Costa and in surrounding areas, the club is working with Disney on a national study in which they measure how much water is wasted by Disneyland bathroom facilities.
“We are still in the planning stage of the study, but I think it will go well,” Horowitz said. “We have committed members that are willing to work hard, which should result in a successful project.”
Since the start of the Water Conservation Club, the members have raised $3,000 to go toward helping the drought in California.
Using some of the funds that they raised, the members hosted a “mulch day” on campus last June, where students put mulch around plants in order to control weeds, hold moisture in soil and keep soil temperature constant all while limiting the use of water. Wah and Horowitz plan on hosting another event in January.
“A great advantage to having a club with friends is that there is already an instant ‘team bond,’ and we are for the most part on the same page on many topics,” Wah said. “We have big plans ahead of us to take this club to the state and possibly national level.”
