It isn’t often that we get a follow up on our favorite shows, especially not over a decade later. Despite its flaws, Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” provides viewers with a sense of nostalgia and overall delight through its use of memorable monologues and numerous cameos, while keeping the charisma and original quality of “Gilmore Girls.”

“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” is an original Netflix sequel to the highly popular 2000’s comedy-drama series “Gilmore Girls.” The miniseries portrays the return of the mother and daughter duo, Lorelai (Alexis Bledel) and Rory Gilmore (Lauren Graham).

The dialogue in “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” brings a quirky and comedic feel to the show much like “Gilmore Girls” possessed. Many of the powerful scenes throughout the series brought a sense of the original show through the use of the fairly similar plot twists.

The miniseries also manages to sustain the originality of “Gilmore Girls,” a refreshing quality that many other series’ sequels do not possess with such ease, especially after almost a decade between the release of “Gilmore Girls” and “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”

Additionally, the on-screen chemistry between Bledel and Graham seems to be intact from that of theirs ten years ago. The two deliver high energy performances and powerful rushes of emotion, scene after scene.

However, despite the nostalgic feel of the show, the ongoing use of subpar punchlines decreases the overall comedy level of the show. Due to this repetition of antics, the show quickly becomes tiresome and seems to drag on.

The series consisted of only four 90 minute episodes, causing each episode to be jam packed with important events. This aspect seemed to put little to no importance on each critical plot point. Due to the lack of time in each episode, the series rapidly became overwhelming and hard to follow.

“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” lacks in delivering new and comical material to the audience. However, regardless of the repeated dialogue, the show is an extremely successful attempt at a sequel and it does not disappoint.

“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” was released on Nov. 25 and is available for streaming on Netflix.
