The Manhattan Beach Unified School District’s Parent Teacher Association announced the winners of the 2016-17 Reflections Art Program earlier this week on Mira Costa’s website.
The art contest is a contest hosted throughout the country’s different communities in which the PTA asks students to submit a work of art in the categories of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography or Visual Arts. See below for the list of Mira Costa’s winners.
“I submitted a painting to the contest. It was a puzzle with pictures that represented me,” junior Jasmine Noh said. “When I found out that I won, I was happy because this was one of the paintings that I tried my best on and am proud of.”
This year’s theme for the contest was “What is Your Story?” According to the PTA website, the purpose of the theme was to allow applicants to express themselves and show the world as they see it.
The district will select several of the winners to advance to the the state level PTA judging. State winners will attend the California State PTA Conference and will advance to the final National PTA judging. National-level honorees will have their artworks displayed in the program’s national exhibit.
“I chose to participate so that other people in the city could see what life was like in the mountains through my photography,” junior Aaron Kissel said. “To be honest, the theme this year wasn’t my favorite, but I made it work and focused more on the journey of how I ended up at the base of a glacier, rather than the landscape itself.”
