Costa junior Annika Hanson placed first in Costa’s annual Poetry Out Loud competition in the small theatre yesterday night.

Hanson performed “Movement Song” by Audre Lord and “September, 1918” by Amy Lowell and will go on to compete in the Los Angeles County Poetry Out Loud Competition in February. Other participants included Anthony Olivas who placed second, Katherine Elias who placed third, Cara Martinez, Jamie Stickelmaier, Jillian Reed, Cameron Campman, Nell Turley, and Allison Hanna.

“I’ve been going to the Costa Poetry Out Loud competitions since I was in middle school because my older sister competed, and when I became a freshman I was so excited to finally compete myself,” Hanson said. “Poetry is a passion of mine, so I’m so excited I won this year and I’m looking forward to the county competition.”
