On Saturday, January 21st, a mass inaugural protest was held in Los Angeles against President Trump. Amongst the protestors were several Mira Costa High School students.
The event was coordinated for “the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families,” according to the march’s organizers. Reproductive, LGBTQ and immigrant rights were several of the hotly contented issues at the protest
“The atmosphere was peaceful, positive, strong-willed and inspirational. It was a coming together of so many amazing and beautiful people with the same mindset and the positive energy of like-minded people was incredible,” said Costa senior Lindsay Thomasson. “After hearing some of the disgusting and misogynistic things Mr. Trump has said, it really upset me that half of America thinks it’s okay to let him have the highest and most honorable seat in our country. The march uplifted me because I now know and saw that over 750,000 men and women in the LA area believe that Trump is unfit to be our president.”
The event had a large amount of high-profile guests and speakers on stage, such as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Barbara Streisand, Miley Cyrus and many other celebrities. The turnout was much larger than expected, as the Los Angeles Metro was filled to full capacity early in the day. Similar protests were held worldwide in Washington D.C., Boston, London, Paris and many other metropolitan areas.
“I wanted to be a part of something that allowed me to express how I felt about the inauguration,” said Costa senior Aubrey French. “Being in an atmosphere as accepting and kind as that made me so proud to be a part of it.”
