The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a new extended day kindergarten schedule on Jan. 18 which will take effect in the fall of 2017.

According to MBUSD President Jennifer Cochran, the Kindergarten Schedule Committee felt that an extended day was good for students. There would be more time for instruction in kindergarten, and also allowed for more time for the programs such as art and music. MBUSD established several different schedules, and each school will decide which schedule makes most sense for them and adopt the schedule they prefer.

“The district has been talking about extending kindergarten for many years, and the biggest constraint has been classroom space in the schools,” Cochran said.  “When we worked on the Facilities Master Plan for our schools, we did so with the idea that our schools would be renovated to accommodate extended day kindergarten.”
