Despite Whittet, Villacorta’s goals, soccer’s defensive lapses prove detrimental in 6-2 defeat

Redondo appeared stronger, faster and better in Costa’s loss Tuesday night.

The Mustangs’ girls soccer team lost to rival Redondo Union, 6-2, in an away game on Tuesday. The team was unable to score apart from goals by senior midfielder Viviana Villacorta and senior forward Delaney Whittet.

“We started the game with good momentum, but we lost it when they scored a couple of lucky goals on us,” Villacorta said. “We just couldn’t connect or find the back of the net. It was just an unfortunate game.”

After falling behind early, the Mustangs were able to find the back of the net on a goal from Villacorta. Going into the half, Costa remained down, 4-1.

“We fought hard the whole game,” junior midfielder Genevieve Watkins said. “We just came up short too often on good scoring opportunities, especially in the first half, which would’ve really set the tone for the game.”

Early into the second half, the Seahawks were able to score once again, increasing the margin to 5-1. Moments later, Whittet scored off a corner kick to cut Redondo’s lead to three.

“We just had an off day as a team, so we were unable to play to our strengths,” senior mid-fielder Whitney Davis said. “It was an unfortunate outcome, but after we regroup and go over the game tactically, we’ll come back even stronger.”

The Mustangs, now 10-3 overall and 1-2 in Bay League, will next play Peninsula High School in an away game today. Villacorta said she wants to come out strong and maintain strength throughout the game.

“We will definitely be working on defending and finishing this week in preparation for Peninsula,” Villacorta said. “We’re going to come out strong and won’t settle for a result like the one we had today.”
