After an excruciating three-second countdown, sophomore Bianca LeBosnoyani got off the mat with a smile on her face; she had just secured a third-place finish in the tournament.
Five members on Mira Costa’s girls wrestling team placed at Capistrano Valley High School on Saturday. LeBosnoyani, freshmen Sarai Ordonez and Leslie Meisel and sophomores Vivianna Ramirez and Alyssa Nocum all finished third in their respective weight classes. The team’s score was not high enough for the team as a whole to place in the top five, instead taking seventh overall.
“I feel that everyone did their best tonight, and I am very proud with how I played as well as my teammates,” LeBosnoyani said. “Although we weren’t able to place as a team tonight, I know we will work hard this week and make sure this doesn’t happen next time.”
LeBosnoyani said the girls were happy with their performances but know they still have room for improvement.
“We all worked really hard today, and I know we all did our best,” freshman Cali Sheldon said. “Having five girls place is always considered a success.”
LeBosnoyani competed in the 116-pound division and lost one match but won three. In her first match, LeBosnoyani was able to pin her opponent, but in her second match, she got pinned. She then went on to subdue the rest of her opponents, finishing third in her division.
“I am very happy with my performance from this weekend,” LeBosnoyani said. “I played against some really tough opponents, but I feel like I did the best I can.”
Another factor contributing to the loss was the absence of junior Sasha Medvidovic, Costa’s consistent top performer for the three previous games.
Medvidovic has been the top-ranked wrestler on the team for the past two years, and she is looking to return to action as soon she is fully healed from a leg injury.
“The girls again played very well, and they should all feel proud of the way they played,” Medvidovic said. “I’m getting better everyday, and hopefully I will return very soon and be able to compete at a high level again.”
The Mustangs, now 2-1 overall, played a Bay League match against Peninsula High School at home on Thursday, but results were unavailable at the time of publication.
“We are going to give it our all this week at practice and work super hard,” LeBosnoyani said. “We really want to have a strong performance and a win this week against Peninsula, who usually puts together a decent team.”
