Junior Jared Williams breathed a sigh of and shook his opponent’s hand with a smile on his face after pinning him to win the match. Williams made quick work of his opponent from Peninsula, beating him in the first period, and was a top performer on the day.
The boys wrestling team narrowly won its home meet Thursday, coming down to the final match against Peninsula. The final score was 36-33. According to Coach Jimmy Chaney, it was a tough victory.

“Although our team did not wrestle up to their standards, they still came out with a slim victory,” Chaney said. “However, a win is a win and now we know what to work on.”
Williams, who wrestled in the 154-pound weight class, pinned his opponent in just under 1 minute to win his only match of the day. According to Williams, he wrestled well.
“I felt that I wrestled pretty well overall, but I felt a bit slow and more tired than I should have,” Williams said. “I know I need to improve my cardio in time for the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation championships.”
Wrestling in the 138-pound weight class, sophomore Tyler Gordon lasted three rounds and beat his opponent 6-5. According to Gordon, it was a nail biter.
“I went up against a very solid opponent but I was able to pull of the win,” Gordon said. “My practice and improved cardio definitely increased my confidence and helped me perform today.”
Junior Mitchell Halvorsen, wrestling in the 120-pound weight class, narrowly lost his match 6-5 against his only opponent of the day. Halvorsen feels that there are moves he still needs to work on to prepare for upcoming matches.
“I felt that I did not wrestle to my best ability today and just barely lost my match,” Halvorsen said. “I need to increase my weight and cardio training and perform better next time.”
Halvorsen was participating in just his second match back from an injury. He believes he was somewhat rusty and knows what he can improve.
“Just coming back from injury, I felt somewhat sluggish today,” Halvorsen said. “However, I am very confident my training before my next match will be very beneficial to me.”
Williams has been wrestling at a high level and has won his last seven matches. He believes the team is performing pretty well but sees room for improvement.
“I know I need to improve my cardio but the team does as well,” Williams said. “We are going to train extra hard to prepare for CIF and we know we are going to be ready to make a deep run this year.”
Costa, now 5-8 overall and on a 4 match win streak, travels to Redondo High School on Friday for their fourteenth and last meet before CIF begins. Coach Chaney said the team is energized and excited for the match.
“Redondo is one of our school’s biggest rivals so this upcoming match means a lot,” Chaney said. “Our team is training hard and looking forward to competing against the Seahawks.”
