Girls soccer ties with Peninsula

Mira Costa’s girls soccer team battled to a scoreless tie against the Peninsula High School Panthers away on Friday, despite offensive efforts from junior midfielder Genevieve Watkins.

After countless offensive attacks, led by Watkins, the Mustangs were unable to connect on the last pass on each attack to put the ball in the back of the net. Watkins says that the team played well, but has some work to do if they want to score.

“I thought that today we played well, considering we were coming off of a pretty big loss to Redondo,” Watkins said. “We did a great job of moving the ball up and down the field, but we just could not find a way to finish off the plays and find that go-ahead goal.”

The Mustangs, now 9-3-2 overall, and 1-2-1 in Bay League, will seek revenge against Palos Verdes on Tuesday at home, after last time suffering a 3-1 loss to the Sea Kings. Watkins says if the team can find a way to score, they should become victorious.

“I love playing against rivals like Palos Verdes because it really brings out the best in everyone,” Watkins said. “It will definitely be a battle, and in the end, it’s going to come down to who wants it more, and who can find that last surge of energy to poke in a late winner.”
