The Mira Costa girls’ cross country team traveled to Mt. San Antonio College to compete in the CIF Southern Section Finals on Nov. 20. Due to the rain, the girls raced the 3.2 mile rain course instead of the standard 2.9 mile course. They raced with hopes to secure a spot in the State Championship meet.
Costa finished with a stellar second-place to national powerhouse Saugus, closely defeating rival Redondo. Senior Savannah Pio finished as the Southern Section champion with a time of 18:07. Also recognized as a top ten individual, senior Aryn Foland finished fifth with a time of 18:17. Junior Kelli Sugimoto barely missed the top ten with a twelfth place finish in 18:50. Junior Vivien Cherrette finished 19th in 19:02. Senior Shannon Hagedorn was the last scoring runner, finishing 31st in 19:21. Junior Jenna Tong and sophomore Sarah Locke-Henderson also ran in the southern section finals.
Next, they will travel to Fresno for the State Championship race.
