Though distance running requires pacing, the Mira Costa girls cross country team has charged full speed ahead in the post season. After coming in second to Saugus at CIF Southern Section Finals, the girls finished second in the state when they raced at Woodward Park in Fresno on Nov. 27.
Senior Savannah Pio became the Division II State Champion with a time of 17:27. Senior Aryn Foland also finished in the top five with a fourth place finish in 17:48. Junior Kelli Sugimoto, junior Vivien Cherrette and senior Shannon Hagedorn scored for Costa as well. Junior Jenna Tong and sophomore Sarah Locke-Henderson also raced in the state championships.
After power merging, the girls earned an automatic invitation to Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon. The team will travel to Portland on December 2 to race against the best teams in the nation.
