The feeling of qualifying for state is something only a few wrestlers in California will feel; for Sasha Medvidovic that feeling is all too familiar.

Mira Costa’s girls wrestling team had three girls compete in California Interscholastic Federation this past Friday and Saturday. The three that competed were sophomores Alyssa Nocum and Bianca LeBosnoyani, and junior Sasha Medvidovic who was able to finish top eight in her weight division enabling her to be able to compete in state.

“I am very happy I was able to qualify for state,” Medvidovic said. “Although I was injured for a majority of the season I am glad I was able to find some strength and qualify.”

Medvidovic who has been injured with a lower leg injury for the majority of the season was able to make a resounding return competing in her first wrestling matches in weeks and still finding a way to qualify for state.  Competing in the 150 pound weight division, Medovic only last two of her matches the whole weekend and finished with a seventh place finish.

“As I haven’t competed in a while there was definitely some rust in my first few matches,” Medvidovic said.  “After those first few games though I was feeling great and my knee was holding up very well.”

Nocum competed in the 111 pound weight division this weekend, she finished with two wins and two losses which unfortunately was not enough to qualify her for state putting her just two matches behind.  Nocum said that she was very proud of her performance and can’t wait to keep competing in the next couple years.

“It was pretty upsetting knowing I came so close to being able to compete in state,” Nocum said. “However I know I have several things to work on if I want to bring my game up to the next level which I will be able to work on over the next couple years here at Costa. ”

LeBosnoyani competed in the 116 pound weight division this weekend, after losing her first two matches LeBosnoyani’s hopes of competing in state were all gone as she was no longer able to compete.  LeBosnoyani said that she knows there is lots of work she has to by next year if she wants to step up her game and be able to compete in state.

“There are still a lot of places that I need to improve and step up my game,” LeBosnoyani said. “Luckily I am only a sophomore though so I have lots of time to train and practice to significantly improve by next year.”

The Mustangs finished with a record of 2-1 as a team, and throughout the season had many girls place in at least the top five at least once during the season.  LeBosnoyani said she is expecting the team next year to be solid and can’t wait to compete herself.

“We had a very solid group of girls this year and I expect nothing less next year,” LeBosnoyani said. “It was a very fun season and I can’t wait to compete again next year.”
