Mira Costa’s boys soccer team won their first CIF playoff game due to a win in penalty shootouts after the game against Santa Ana High School ended 1-1 on Thursday. Top performances came from senior midfielder Max Taylor and senior defender Brady Douglas.
Mira Costa scored the first goal of the game when Taylor slotted away a penalty which was given due to a handball from the opposing team. Junior defender Josh Rudow and the rest of the defence were unable to keep a clean sheet as Santa Ana tied the game at 1-1. The game went to penalty shootouts, and Douglas was able to score the last penalty to give Costa the win.
“I think that we played extremely well today and we played a great team,” Rudow said. “Winning a playoff game is an awesome experience and I am really proud of how the team played as a unit.”
The Mustangs, now 14-5-2, will play their next game on Wednesday. The opponent is yet to be determined, but the team knows that because it is playoffs it is a win or go home situation. According to Rudow, the team is very motivated to do well.
“We played really well against Santa Ana and I think that we should keep the momentum going which we had from this game,” Rudow said. “We don’t know our opponent but what we do know is that we’re going to give it our all.”
