Mira Costa’s Black Scholars Union club organized the Black History Month Assembly today in the auditorium, in order to acknowledge and appreciate the works and ideas of many African-Americans.

Members of BSU introduced acts ranging from performances to speeches. Costa’s Jazz Band played various songs on stage as the assembly started and Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale was the first speaker of the event and spoke about pushing equality for minorities, especially African-Americans.

“I never thought I would be asked to speak at an assembly for Black History Month [because] I’m not black,” Dale said in his speech. “But advocacy and social justice, the soldiers involved in that fight are not based on the color of their skin, but what is in their heart.”

Other speakers included English teacher Diana Sieker who recited the poem, “Poet to Bigot” by Langston Hughs, History teachers Ian Uhalt who discussed voting rights and Steven Singiser who recited Frederick Douglas’ biography. Performances included the Costa Dance Company’s dance to “Man in the Mirror,” by Michael Jackson and Costa’s choir that sang the African National Anthem.

“The purpose of the Black Scholars Union is to provide African-Americans at Mira Costa with an environment where they can be around more people who look like them,” BSU Treasurer and senior Michai Clinton said. “One of the best features of BSU, however, is that everyone is welcome, regardless of one’s race. Allowing people of all colors to be involved in the club adds to the diversity of BSU.”
